We are both doctors, Alan of Medicine and Hetty of Literature, and prior to retirement 12 years ago we practiced and taught in Victoria. Having just celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary, we now wish to visit our youngest in Australia while our grandchildren there remain ungrown-up--all the other six are as adult as their three parents. We also love all animals.
Description. We have a new "western" home (means wood everywhere, gleaming floors and high beams and open spaces) on a ridge overlooking Stuart Channel on the largest of the Gulf Islands: Salt Spring Island. This paradise has ocean and lake views, meadows and parkland, wildlife and wildflowers, everywhere we look. Reading from left to right, the house comprises large master bedroom with ensuite four-piece bath and dressing room; imposing double floor entryway with views through the sitting room over the deck to the sea; powder room , laundry room and walk-in pantry contiguous to large kitchen, which has open plan access to dining room, great room and deck (where there is a central hot tub)--all on the ground floor. Up a sweeping staircase you will find a cosy landing/nook with second T/V. & V.C.R., a roomy attic storage space, two large bedrooms, a four-piece bathroom and a library/study with message and computer centre. There are extensive views from all windows; baseboard!
heating throughout the home, and two fireplaces: a propane log fire in the sitting room and an airtight wood stove in the great room, which heats the entire house efficiently November to April. Gardens are ponded and full of wildflowers, except for a fenced- off area for those plants the deer--frequent visitors--love to munch. There is a large car park area and an attached double garage . The weather here is Mediterranean climate, rarely dipping to 0, and prevailingly sunny and warm. We have ready access to three ferries, bringing Victoria, the famous Butchart Gardens, Vancouver, Nanaimo and the Mount Washington ski-area very close. Apart from offering the scenic splendor of mountain, farmland, beaches and forest, Salt Spring draws tourists because of its rich cultural ambiance; it is a haven for artists and musicians: there are scores of studios open to visitors, and many famous artists live here. The Arts centre, ArtSpring, offers galleries concerts and plays year-round. As seasoned globe-trotters, we love to travel, but we love !even more to come home to what Kipling called the most beautiful area on the planet.
