The
Setting: Vancouver is magnificently set. Cedar forests, magical islands and rich seas have, for thousands of years, inspired masterworks in sculpture, theatre, dance. Native arts, now in renaissance, a renewal you see in action in Vancouver & nearby islands. But Canadians don't boast. So, we never say that our forests, islands & mountains are among the most beautiful in the world! And all perfumed with cedar. Shhhhh! Casual outdoor activities or vigorous sports in easy reach of our house.
Examples:
5 mins. on foot: beach walk, swim; boat & windsurf rentals & lessons. 30 mins by car: Seymour mountain - a hike that feels like a painting by Sesho. Other mountains even closer. 3 hours by car: ski, hike, golf, swim at famous resorts: Whistler Mountain, Blacktusk, many other trails. Camp in woods, cabins or fancy lodges. 5 hours (car & ferry): surfing at Tofino on West Coast of Vancouver Island - the wild Pacific! Kayaking, biking or horseback riding at Denman, Hornby, Saltspring.... a dozen isles in the Gulf of Georgia on the protected east side of Vancouver Island, are home to artists & artisans of all kinds. Adventure "schools" teach rock climbing, kayaking etc. Sedentary pursuits: beach combing, fine dining, shopping. Big boats take you out to watch the whales. Vancouver has good music, theatre, film, dance. But for Parisians, the joys of nature are may be the most important ones to sample, just because they are so different from the beauties of the Loire or the Luberon. Our Immediate Neighborhood Definitely urban, but feels like country: sailing, & windsurfing 5 min. walk.
Downtown: 20 mins. by car. The nearby university has a decent library, many attractions e.g. the Museum of Anthropology, designed by Arthur Erickson, - extraordinary collection of monumental carvings, huge dramatic masks and gold jewelry by Native artists of the Northwest Coast; theatres, concert halls, art gallery, a Botanical Garden and very fine Japanese garden . All less than 10 mins. by car. A fine farmers' market, French & Italian bakeries, even a first rate cheese shop (honestly!) are less than 15 minutes by car. Tree-lined streets, pleasant homes with gardens, good shops, cafés, cinema, restaurants are nearby neighbors. Other information: We know our city well. We'll be glad to help you find the resources of interest to you. Our two adult sons will help you settle in. We can discuss use of our car (Ford station wagon). Sorry, no pets. Non smokers preferred. We are good housekeepers & seek partners the same. Place of Exchange Paris: a favorite destination since our marriage many years ago! We want to introduce two teenage granddaughters to some of our haunts and friends. We prefer the 5eme, 6eme, or possibly 7eme or 4eme. We can assure our exchange partners that our house has an equally desirable location in Vancouver. Time of Exchange: We'd like to stay in Paris for 2 or 3 months starting September 1st, 2001. Our granddaughters Nina, 13 and Roxanne, 15 will be with us for the first 2 weeks. We must have the exchange during their visit, of course, and would like to continue to the end of October or even into November if possible. The People: Judah is an architect, very much interested in the renovations in the Rue Galande and environs; Barbara is a former teacher (theatre arts and English) who now helps immigrants find work and friends in Canada. Nina dances in a local ballet company and is interested in fashion design. Roxanne participates in musical theatre. Our sons, Michael, a sculptor & teacher, and Cal, a film director and producer, both live in Vancouver and will be your contacts here. Everyone in our family speaks some French so feel free to write us in French or English as you please. Moi, je fais toute une petite montagne de fautes de grammaire en francais, mais je comprends la plupart de ce qu'on me dit.   Canada - will appeal to you. If you like outdoor activities in glorious natural settings, w. beautiful house to come home to, please reply!
