Chambery is the center of an urban area of more than 100,000 inhabitants,
and is situated in the French Alps between the Bauges massif and the
Chartreuse mountain range, in the valley that bears its name. It's in the
heart of one of the best skiing areas of the world. To the south the town
stretches out to the vineyards on the hillsides of the Combe of Savoy; to
the north it almost reaches the shores of Lake Bourget, France's largest
natural lake. In former centuries, the growth of Chambery was closely
linked to the fortune of the House of Savoy, one of Europe's oldest ruling
families, dating from the 11th century. From 1295 to 1563, the Savoys
elected the town as their capital, mainly because of its situation at the
crossroads of the Alpine traffic between France, Italy and Switzerland.
Communication facilities are also at the root of Chambery sound economic
resources. Traditionally an administrative and commercial center, the town
has taken advantage of the surge of interest connected with the 1992
Winter Olympics of Albertville to strengthen its position and assert its
role as "Alpine heartland of Europe".
Nearest metropolitan area: Within 50 miles: Lyon, Grenoble, Geneva.
French, Swiss and Italian Alps. Paris, Milan and Turin are 3 hours away.
Available options: Home and Hospitality Exchange. We are more
inclined to exchange, otherwise the rent is $800 per week, or $3000 per
month, including maid services. No smoking, no pets.
