Description. We live in a light and airy 3-bedroom family home, with an
expansive outlook over trees, park, houses, and peeps of the sea. It
is located in a quiet, peaceful street, only minutes walk to the
lively Parnell restaurant and shopping area. We have a large sunny
lounge, a separate dining area, and large kitchen. There is a small
outdoor patio area with fishpond, and a garden with citrus and other
trees. The house has all modern conveniences, and has a relaxed,
comfortable feel. Parnell is one of Auckland's most desirable neighborhoods. It is a leafy area, with an eclectic mix of
architecture. It is known for its restaurants, cafes, art galleries,
and specialty shops. Nearby Newmarket (also walking distance) is a
large and interesting shopping area which meets all requirements
(including supermarket, movie theatres, gym). Parnell has numerous
beautiful parks, including the large Auckland Domain, where the
Auckland museum is located. This museum has an outstanding
collection of Polynesian exhibits, and it is the most visited museum
in the Southern hemisphere. Also close by are tennis courts,
swimming pools, and waterfront walking and biking paths. Parnell's
central location affords easy access to many of Auckland's other
attractions by public transport. It is close to the downtown centre,
the university, the waterfront, and the America's cup village.
Auckland is a vibrant South Pacific city (population around 1
million). It is the largest Polynesian city in the world. Auckland
is built between two harbours. The Hauraki Gulf opens out into the
Pacific Ocean, and the Manukau Harbour opens into the Tasman Sea.
The Hauraki Gulf contains numerous subtropical islands, including a
native bird reserve, holiday islands complete with cafes and
wineries, and an extinct volcano. It is perfect for sailing,
fishing, windsurfing, and kayaking. Within Auckland city, there are
numerous safe beaches. Auckland has a lively restaurant and café
culture. Excellent food and local wine are readily available. There
are interesting art galleries, libraries, and a range of performing
arts. Within 40-60 minutes of the city centre are spectacular wild
surf beaches (e.g., the beach where The Piano was filmed),
vineyards, 'bush' (forest) walks, and many golf courses.
We are both university
academics, who will be on sabbatical over the time of the exchange.
Russell is an evolutionary biologist, who will be visiting
University College London. Nicola is a psychologist, who will be
working on a book project. Our daughter, Rosa, is nearly 5. She will
be spending the days sightseeing with Nicola's mother Beth, who will
be traveling with us. Rosa is a happy, caring child, who is also
respectful of property. We are non-smokers, and prefer no smoking in
the house. We have an elderly cat, Samantha, who we would only leave
with other cat lovers (otherwise we would arrange alternative
accommodation for her).
