Description.  Ajo is a charming ex-mining town in the middle of the Sonoran desert, the most species-diverse desert in the world. We are surrounded within five minutes by: Organ Pipe cactus national Monument to the south; Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife refuge to the west; Barry Goldwater Military range to the north and the vast Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation to the east. Ajo, population about 3,000, is 100 miles southwest of Phoenix, 130 miles west of Tucson, 40 miles north of the Mexican border and 100 miles north of the Gulf of California (or Sea of Cortez). This is the classic example of the reason for the great myths of the old west. Summer is extremely hot - 110- 118 degrees fahrenheit. Home is airy and light with central air, satellite tv (in every room) and fun to be in.
