Description.  We're professors and we’ve had 3 very successful exchanges—Hanover, Germany in 2001, Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 2000 and Shoreham-by-the-Sea, UK in 1999.
Our holiday preference is to begin an exchange between April 1 and April 10, to extend for approximately 4 weeks. This is negotiable to some extent, but we are planning to attend a conference in York April 13-15 so are planning with that event in mind. We prefer to be located within 1 hour by rail from London, but would consider any offer. It is important that we are within 15 minutes walking distance to public transportation, as we do not plan to rent a car and will be using a rail pass for day trips.
We live in Emeryville, CA, very close and with public transportation (15 minutes) to San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Our home is a condominium facing the San Francisco Bay, in a very safe and friendly community. There are 2 heated swimming pools, 2 hot tubs, tennis, gym and grocery within easy walking distance. We will have a neighbor stop by and show you how to find the laundry (upstairs, elevator available) and answer questions. We will scan a few pictures of our home to post or e-mail to you upon request. The Visitor’s Guide to Emeryville is at: http://www.ci.emeryville.ca.us/visitorsguide.html
Children are welcome, although we expect that school is still in session. If 3-4 people are coming, we have only one bedroom but we have a living room sofa that converts to a double bed, or a futon mattress for a guest bed. We have 2 full bathrooms. Our apartment is all-electric and easy to maintain. We leave instructions and phone numbers for reference. If you want, we have a housekeeping service available—we can discuss in more detail if you are interested, or cancel their visit during our vacation. Of course we have a television, VCR and CD player!
We ask that you water plants on our deck once a week. Otherwise, we have a hummingbird feeder—we can discuss whether you are interested in feeding them. You will see egrets, gulls, ducks and the occasional pelican in our “back yard,” but you don’t need to care for them. We will discuss any needs you have for the care of houseplants, garden or pets.
We don’t exchange automobiles, but can give you detailed information on car rentals and will leave guidebooks and maps for your reference. We do not exchange computers, as ours is not working well and might crash.
